Wrecks

Wrecks are a part of racing and in some cases, you can't avoid them.
That said, when a driver causes a wreck or single car wreck created by
the driver, is the driver assessed any repair cost in the event the
car cannot finish the race, or sponsor commitment dollars reduced?

At the Cup level? No. All he looses is whatever prize money he
doesn't get because of his poor finish.

At lower levels, it varies. Sometimes the driver is expected to
cover a portion, or even the entire cost of fixing the car. This
is more often the case with "rent-a-ride" drivers, which is more
common in sports car racing than in oval track racing. Such
drivers can get insurance against being stuck with a repair bill.

More common in oval track racing is for a driver in the lower
series to be an owner, or part owner, in the team. As such, he
as the driver doesn't pay for the damage, but as the owner he
does.

Was just thinking that this day of being held accountable drivers
might be held accountable at the higher levels as an incentive to
bring the car home with only normal wear and tear, whatever the
definition of that would be after a Cup race to reduce operating costs
for a team, not having to rebuild. Yet, run on the edge of disaster
and be competitive at the same time. Not asking too much.

Drivers who tend to wreck a lot tend not to keep a ride, so
they're held accountable that way. If you ever wonder why
Regan Smith has a ride, and some other drivers don't, it's
because Smith has a reputation for being very easy on
equipment - he doesn't wreck, and he doesn't break stuff.

Which really doesn't matter as much as people think
to sponsors.

And, of course, Regan Smith did win Talladega a couple of
years back.
