YARD SALE SCORE (More Records of History Repeating)

Diane picked up a /big/ book over the weekend for $1.00. It is the
"Pictorial Atlas illustrating the Spanish American War" (copyright
secured by A.T. French, 1898). Pictured here:

http://www.amazon.com/Pictorial-atlas-illustrating-Spanish-American-war/dp/B000870LOA

It's big, 15" tall by 12" wide and a real treat for a guy who loves
history but especially gets a kick out seeing how the rhetoric of
Manifest Destiny has not only been around awhile, but gets recycled.

Some snippets from the preface:

A complete history of the War with Spain, one that will fully supply
that reasonable desire of the people for a careful, thorough and
accurate review of this collision of nations together with the causes
which led to that severance of peaceful relations that had existed since
1797.

The appeal to arms is the last resort of modern rulers. In the earlier
days of civilization, war was a trade to which monarchs devoted their
best energies, and the ground of provocation was really a matter of
little or no consequence. The fact that domestic ties were sundered,
that cities were sacked, that seed-time and harvest were forgotten in
the awful engrossment of carnage, that humanity was brutalized, and that
the fame achieved was a transient thing of no profit to those who paid
for it..., all this was disregarded.

An old writer said: "War is a game which, were their subjects wise,
kings would not play at." And in time the subjects gained that wisdom,
and battle was avoided as an arbiter in disputes.

But..., "the war of 98" was unavoidable. The United States preserved
peace as long as such action was possible, and hoped to the very day
when Spain gave Embassador (the books spelling) Woodford his passports
that diplomacy could unravel the tangled skein which the Castilian had
been for four centuries preparing.

And it is but the fortune of war, the working out of a destiny which
neither men nor nations can control that ushers in an era of greatly
broadened activity for the American people. No longer pent within one
continent, our national energies may reach to the ends of the earth and
affect the mighty history which a new century will unfold. [end quotes]

Did you click on the Amazon link? Shows two books, /only/ two and
they're priced at 100.00 and 150.00. Heh, and that /last/ paragraph no
doubt represented the general attitude in the country at the time. And
some wonder why we are referred to in /some/ quarters as "Imperialist."
LOL, "no longer pent within one continent" indeed.

Thanks. Shows 9 books. The one that sounds the most like the one we
have is going for 100.00, same seller as Amazon. Lowest 34.00, highest
150.00 (also on Amazon).
