GREENSBURG, Ind. -- Police have arrested an Indiana woman accused of
starving to death her
severely disabled son.

Investigators charged 25-year-old Courtney Tressler with reckless homicide
and child neglect
Wednesday, a little more than three months after police found 4-year-old
Payton Ettinger dead in
his crib.

The boy suffered serious injuries at the hands of his father when he was two
months old, police
said, and was unable to speak, walk or control most of his physical
movements.

His father, Martin Ettinger, was convicted of abusing Payton and is serving
a prison sentence in
Michigan.

Tressler called police May 17 to report that Payton was dead, and she told
officers that she had
fed the boy about 11 a.m. and placed him back in his crib before she found
his body about 3 p.m.

However, an autopsy determined that Payton had died from malnutrition and
dehydration, and
coroners found no food in his stomach or intestines.

Tressler said she had intended to take Payton to a doctor May 15 but had
delayed the trip for
financial reasons, but investigators said she twice saw a doctor May 19 for
her own medical
reasons.

Investigators said the boy had not seen a doctor since Nov. 3, 2006, when he
weighed 16 pounds, 5
ounces as a 1-year-old.

Tressler moved from Michigan to Indiana in January 2007 after she married.

The child weighed just 12 pounds at the time of his death, investigators
said, and his body had
no body fat and his face was drawn tightly to his skin with obvious signs of
emaciation.

Police said Tressler never applied for Medicaid assistance for her son, as
she had claimed to
have done twice.
