HOUSTON -- A Baytown doctor's license was suspended Friday after the Texas
Medical Board
determined that his practice of medicine presented a threat to public health
and safety.

Montgomery County Precinct 4 deputy constables said they arrested Dr. Felix
Sabates Jr. after he
was caught going more than 100 mph on U.S. 59 near Porter on July 16.

Deputy constable Eli Rivera said Sabates had bloodshot eyes and small pupils
and could not keep
his balance during his sobriety test. He refused a breathalyzer test,
according to the TMB.

Rivera said Sabates, who is an ophthalmologist, claimed he was speeding in
order to get to a
patient at Cleveland Medical Center.

After a closer look, Rivera said he found a case full of drugs including 60
unmarked capsules
that tested positive for cocaine, 100 morphine pills, 80 hydrocodone pills
and 60 Adderall pills.

Detectives said they also found a pill grinder that also tested positive for
cocaine.

Sabates has been charged with four counts of possession of a controlled
substance, reckless
driving and driving while intoxicated.

According to the TMB, Sabates has a history of substance abuse and mental
illness. In 1994, the
Board entered a five-year order based on findings that Dr. Sabates had
attempted suicide in 1992
and had abused alcohol and cocaine.

Records show that Sabates has no prior criminal charges and does not have
any reportable
malpractice cases against him. However, in 2001, he was publicly reprimanded
and fined for
failing to practice medicine in a professional manner.
